The Importance of the Spine

The spine, commonly referred to as the backbone, is a robust, flexible column made of a series of bones that extend from the base of the skull to the tailbone. These parts include: the vertebrae, facet joints, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerves, ligaments, and muscles.

The spine plays a crucial role in providing structural support for the body, acting as protection for the highly important spinal cord (which sends motor commands from the brain to different parts of the body), and allowing for flexibility of movement (e.g. bending, twisting).

Back and Spine Conditions We Treat

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar stenosis, a form of spinal stenosis, refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back. This presses on the spinal cord and nerve roots, causing pain, numbness, or weakness, often in the legs.

Herniated/Slipped Disc

A herniated or slipped disc occurs when the soft inner portion of a disc pushes through a crack in its tougher exterior. This can irritate surrounding nerves and result in pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs.

Sciatica

Sciatica is characterised by pain radiating down the leg from the lower back. It is typically caused by compression on the sciatic nerve, often due to a herniated disc or spinal stenosis in the lumbar region.

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is common and can stem from muscle strain and poor posture to underlying spinal conditions. While often temporary, chronic lower back pain can affect one’s quality of life.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries result from trauma or damage to the spinal cord. Depending on the severity and location of the injury, symptoms can range from pain and numbness to varying degrees of paralysis.

Surgical Treatments We Provide

Spine Surgery

Spine surgery includes a wide range of procedures to treat various spinal conditions (such as herniated discs and spinal deformities), with the goal of alleviating pain, restoring mobility, and improving overall quality of life.

Microdiscectomy

Microdisectomy is designed to relieve pressure on the nerve roots caused by a herniated disc. By removing the portion of the disc causing the compression, patients often experience pain relief.

Laminectomy

A laminectomy involves removing part or all of the vertebral bone called the lamina. This procedure is typically done to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, often due to spinal stenosis.

Disc Replacement Surgery

As an alternative to spinal fusion, disc replacement surgery involves replacing a damaged or degenerated disc with a new, artificial one.

Lumbar Decompression Surgery

This relieves pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, alleviating symptoms like pain, numbness, or tingling in the legs. It can involve removing bone spurs, portions of the disc, or even the entire disc altogether.

Dr Chua Soo Yong provides effective back and spine treatments tailored to each individual.

Experiencing Back and Spine Pain?

Back or spine pain can range from a dull, persistent ache to sudden and sharp pains that radiate down one’s legs. It can be short-lived (acute) or long-lasting (chronic); with numerous possible causes, including:

  • Muscle or ligament strain due to heavy lifting or sudden awkward movements
  • Bulging or ruptured discs that act as cushions between the vertebrae
  • Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, which can affect the lower back
  • Osteoporosis, which can lead to vertebral fractures
  • Skeletal irregularities, like scoliosis
  • Infection, whether in the spine, kidney, or bladder
  • Cancer of the spine, as the tumour may press against a nerve

Accompanying Symptoms of Back Pain

Serious cases of back pain may have other accompanying symptoms, which may include:

  • Persistent severe pain that does not improve with rest
  • Shooting or stabbing pain that extends down the leg and below the knee
  • Bowel or bladder problems
  • Restricted range of motion or flexibility in the back
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs
If your back pain is affecting your day-to-day life, or has lasted more than 6 weeks, or is accompanied by other symptoms, make an appointment with us at 6262 0555 for a detailed assessment.
